Please take a few minutes to read this before opening the audition results.
Thank you!
To All Who Auditioned...
...Thank you! It takes courage to put yourself in an audition situation. I have enjoyed listening to all of you and am looking forward to working with each of you in whatever choir you have been placed. Before you go to the results, please let me share a few words about the selection process...
I value the opportunity to work with each of my students and appreciate the contribution that each makes. For those of you who are not new to the choirs at MHS, this is probably not your first audition. I have probably had you in class already and have enjoyed working with you. When it comes to auditions, I have to make decisions that are not always what every student would have me make. I try to look at each student from many different perspectives--musical skills (rhythm, pitch, intonation, etc.), vocal ability and development, potential for further development, work ethic, and so forth. I spend hours listening to the recordings made at the auditions and reviewing my notes. Often a student will be strong in one area and not as strong in another. Sometimes, although a student may have many of the qualities that I am looking at in an audition, their voices are simply not as mature or developed as I am looking for in the group they have auditioned for. After taking all of these things into account, I make the decision that I feel is best.
If things didn't work out as you had hoped, know that I look forward to working with you in whatever group you have been assigned and I appreciate the contribution that you will make to that group. You need to understand that the choir you are in does not reflect how much I care for you as a singer or person. Whether your skills and development are significant or you are very inexperienced, I want you to be successful and grow as a singer, musician, and (mostly) as a person. I am dedicated to that and grateful for the opportunity to work with each student.
To those of you who auditioned for the first time, welcome to the choirs at MHS! I am looking forward to working with you and getting to know you in whatever choir you have been assigned to. We have a tradition of great experiences in our choirs and I am excited to have you be a part of that!
Thank you again for auditioning. 2024-25 promises to be another great year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Hinck
p.s. I would be happy to arrange a time (after April 28) to visit with any of you who would like me to give you some pointers on what you might do to prepare for future auditions.
Thank you!
